In February 1989, the pub was gutted by fire, causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage: two chefs on the premises at the time escape suffering only with minor smoke inhalation.
The Jacksons sold the pub in the early 1990s, and over the next 15 years or so, it had several private owners, until early 2006, when James and Kate Mackenzie bought the freehold, undertook a complete – and remarkably speedy! – refurbishment, and opened the new look Pipe and Glass in April of that year.
